Of the Order of Saint Clare (OSC) in Evansville, Indiana
The Poor Clare Nuns are Catholic Women devoted to the Eucharist in prayer and contemplation. They live lives of prayer, community, and joy.
A Poor Clare nun is not a Benedictine, Dominican, or Carmelite, but a nun of the Order of St. Clare (OSC). They number over 20,000 nuns throughout the world in over 70 countries. There are usually around 4-20 members per Poor Clare community. Every Poor Clare community will be slightly different because of the unique personalities of the members, but each location will always hold the same spirit of prayer, simplicity, community, and joy. A typical day for the Poor Clare Nuns starts off with several hours of private prayer every morning. Afterwards, the sisters meet for daily Mass and community prayers. The sisters then begin to prepare food in silence, in order to pray as they work.
In the afternoons, they have two hours of free time. Some sisters take walks through the forests surrounding the monastery. Others sew, play music, or read. Free time is followed by additional prayer times, meals, and a short recreation period.
This is our typical schedule, but it may vary day to day depending on priest availability for Mass.
